Sukma 2022: Hockey legend Minarwan proud of daughter’s gold in silat

NILAI, Sept 21 — The apple does not fall far from the tree.

This best describes Mirsha Nurathiqa, daughter of national hockey legend Datuk Mirnawan Nawawi, who is also involved in sports.

Despite not following in her father’s footsteps, Mirsha Nurathiqa still made her family proud after winning gold in the putri silat solo creative category on her debut at the 20th Malaysian Games (Sukma) here today.

The 20-year-old Selangor exponent displayed a solid performance in her routine with a dagger, a stick and machetes, amassing 9,925 points to edge out nearest challenger Nur Inatha Khairuniyah Wira from Kedah, who collected 9,910 points for silver.

Mirsha Nurathiqa said the presence of Mirnawan, 51, and her mother, Datin Haryati Zahriman, 49, had inspired her to put up the winning performance at Dewan Tuanku Canselor, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) here.

“I really did not expect to win today because other participants also did their best. I think the win was written in the stars and I am very grateful,” she told reporters.

Asked if she would join the national squad if given a chance, the third-year architecture student at the International Islamic University refused to think about it for now because she wanted to focus on her studies.

Meanwhile, Mirnawan was happy with his daughter’s achievement because the sacrifices she made since she was active in silat at the age of 15 had finally paid off.

The former skipper of the national team did not mind that his daughter did not take up hockey, as the important thing is for her to be active in sports.

Maisarah Zainal from Perlis and Nur Fauza Hidayah Abd Rahim from Negeri Sembilan won bronze after losing in the semi-finals.

The putra creative solo category saw Shahir Azizi Aminudin from Melaka collect 9,920 points to defeat his opponent from Terengganu, Che Mohamad Fikri Che Ab Rahman, who collected 9,425 points for the silver medal.

The bronze medal went to Muhammad Syamim Asyraf Zaidi from Selangor and Negeri Sembilan’s Muhammad Firdaus Yaakop.
