Exco: State govt supporting SMEs transform into digital enterprises

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 — The Selangor government plans to improve the state’s e-commerce environment to promote the use of digital platforms by small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

State executive councillor for investment, industry and trade Dato’ Teng Chang Khim said that by doing so, the state administration intends to support SMEs in using e-commerce platforms to conduct their business worldwide.

He said the focus on expanding the industry and business environment comes at a time when it is becoming more difficult to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) to support economic growth in the state.

“Therefore, there needs to be an inclusive digital transformation in the country to build a competitive and progressive digital economy to keep up with the developed countries.

“The world is changing, and unless we adapt, we will fall behind our competitors. Businesses need to digitalise, innovate and adjust business models to capture new revenue streams both locally and abroad.

“With that, I hope we can continue to embark on the journey with all startups, SMEs and entrepreneurs into adopting and embracing the transformation and advancement of the digital economy,” he said when delivering his speech at the launch of the Selangor SME Digitalisation Conference at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, here today.

Organised by the Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation (Sidec), the conference was one of the programmes lined up under the Smart City and Digital Economy Convention (SDEC), which is one of the six components featured at the Selangor International Business Summit (SIBS) 2022.

Meanwhile, Teng said that there are no restrictions on the level of digitalisation given that every organisation’s level of digital maturity, even by economic sector, varies from one another.

“SMEs that successfully reinvented themselves for the digital future are those that successfully integrate digital into their identity to offer constant innovation into daily operations.

“There is no doubt that we live in an era driven by the digital revolution, and to succeed, we must thrive in it. Data and technology will continue to change how we live, work and prosper.

“Therefore, on behalf of the Selangor state government, I hope that everyone in this room will use their best talents to help expedite the state to achieve the status of Smart State by 2025,” he said.
