Unreasonable for Umno to pressure PM for Parliament dissolution — Anwar

By Zareef Muzammil

SUBANG JAYA, Oct 2 — Umno is in no position to coerce Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and force him to dissolve Parliament since it does not have a majority of the seats, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Pakatan Harapan chairman said Umno only controls 38 of the 222 Dewan Rakyat seats at the present, and as such does not have the power to make such demands.

“Umno has 38 MPs, in our (political) system 38 MPs cannot force the decision to dissolve Parliament.

“Such a decision must be made with the prime minister’s authority, so long as the prime minister in question has the strength to do so and takes action sensibly in his/her capacity,” he said.

Anwar was speaking to reporters during the launch of the book ‘SCRIPT – For A Better Malaysia‘ at the Dorsett Grand Subang Hotel in SS12, earlier today.

The Leader of the Opposition was asked to comment on the recent decision by Umno’s Supreme Council which called for the 15th general election to be held this year.

Per this decision, Ismail will present the dates of Parliamentary dissolution to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for His Majesty’s perusal, per Article 40 (1) of the Federal Constitution.
