Welfare programmes not a populist move, aimed to boost socioeconomic of the people — MB

By Siti Rohaizah Zainal

KLANG, Oct 24 — Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari has insisted that the various welfare initiatives implemented by the state government are not a populist move.

He said the focus of initiating the programmes is to empower the people of Selangor.

“When we began administering Selangor in 2008, there were only seven programmes initiated by the state administration, which have expanded to 44 programmes since.

“This is not simply a populist move to woo the people but it is so that we achieve the goals that have been set.

“Take for example the Peduli Sihat programme, which was introduced to ease the process for people to check their health status. We also offer other support such as for housing and newlyweds.

“All of the initiatives are included in the Iltizam Selangor Penyayang programme which have been improved. The programme has also helped in boosting the socioeconomic of the people,” said Amirudin during the launch of the Jelajah Selangor Penyayang roadshow at Sultan Suleiman Stadium, here yesterday.

The ISP initiatie with an allocation of over RM60 million covers 12 family welfare programmes, health (10), education (eight), housing (seven) and employment (five).

The scheme that replaced the Inisiatif Peduli Rakyat (IPR) also introduced 11 new programmes including the free health screening Selangor Saring, Iltizam Anak Penyayang, Selangor Cancer (CanSEL) screening and Selangor Mental Health (Sehat).
