Free water scheme to be extended to all citizens in future

By Norrasyidah Arshad

SHAH ALAM, Nov 24 — The Skim Air Darul Ehsan will soon be extended to all citizens when Pengurusan Air Selangor (Air Selangor) successfully contributes dividends, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the provision of free 20 cubic metres of water per month was also done after the company was able to complete its full transformation.

“Based on Air Selangor’s business plan, we expect this scheme to be fully implemented, but not right now.

“Currently, the state government’s free water scheme is having funds added to it, in addition to Air Selangor’s surplus funds even though the company is moving with negative projections, because this is a business plan approved by the National Water Services Commission and Permodalan Aset Air Berhad,” Amirudin said.

He was responding to a query from Sijangkang state assemblyman Datuk Dr Yunus Hairi, during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting, earlier today.

The Menteri Besar added the two agencies involved also provided loans to implement several projects.

The projects involve the upgrading of sewerage systems, pipelines, and asset management to maintain good services.

During the Merdeka eve programme on August 30, Amirudin said an additional 100,000 user accounts will enjoy free water at a cost of over RM30 million, fully borne for by the Selangor government.

The minimum income threshold to qualify for the scheme has also been increased from RM4,000 to RM5,000.

Registrations are still open to Selangor residents until December 31, 2024. To qualify, applicants must be Malaysian citizens, reside in individual metre-type residential premises, and are limited to one account only
