Golf: Shariffuddin, Paul to lead Malaysian charge at Selangor Masters

PETALING JAYA, Nov 22 — Shariffuddin Ariffin and Paul San are leading Malaysia’s challenge in the Selangor Masters 2022, to be held at Seri Selangor Golf Club from tomorrow until November 26.

Shariffuddin, 22 and Paul, 25, must be on their top game to secure their berths for the 2023 Asian Tour.

Ranked seventh and ninth respectively in the Asian Development Tour’s (ADT) Order of Merit, both Shariffuddin and Paul will have to maintain the top 10 spots to qualify.

Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said though the Covid-19 pandemic halted the event in 2020-2021, the tournament returns with participation from 135 professionals and amateurs competing for US$150,000 (RM687,000), making it one of the more lucrative stops on the ADT.

“When we heard there was an opportunity to host an ADT event, we quickly jumped at the offer. Despite the last-minute notice, we are rather excited at being able to host a professional event again.

“I am also happy to announce that this tournament is being organised in conjunction with the 77 birthday celebrations of His Highness the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharifuddin Idris Shah,” said Amirudin who is also chairman of the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) Board.

He said golf plays an important role in the state’s ongoing efforts to increase tourism revenue through sporting events, and aims to make the Selangor Masters part of the Asian Tour in the near future.

Headlining the event will be Thailand stalwarts Suteepat Prateeptienchai and Chonlatit Chuenboonngam who are currently ranked first and second in the ADT Order of Merit, where they have so far won US$57,538 (RM263,524) and US$56,138 (RM257,112) respectively.
