Malaysia to see continuous heavy rain, high tides in early Nov as monsoon season expected to begin earlier

By Sulyn Chong

SHAH ALAM, Nov 3 — Continuous heavy rain and high tide phenomenon from November 6 to November 11 are expected in Malaysia, as the northeast monsoon has been predicted to begin earlier than expected.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the monsoon season is expected to begin on November 7, and will continue until March 2023.

It said four to six monsoon episodes are likely to occur throughout this period, bringing continuous heavy rains.

“Similar to the previous monsoon season, continuous heavy rains are expected for several days and may result in flooding, especially in low-lying areas and areas near rivers. Continuous and strong northeast winds are also anticipated to occur,” MetMalaysia said in a statement.

The agency added that warnings of the likelihood of flood risks may increase, if continuous heavy rains and the high-tide event occur concurrently.

“If continuous heavy rains occur at the same time as high-tide phenomena, the risk of flooding may increase. High tide may also cause rough seas and large waves around the waters of South China Sea,” it said.

High tide phenomenon is expected to occur during the following period:

  • November 6 – November 11 and November 22 to November 27.
  • December 7 to December 12 and December 22 to December 26.
  • January 6 to January 10 and January 21 to January 25.

MetMalaysia advises the public to always be prepared for the monsoon season, as well as to be aware of the information, advice and weather warnings it issues.

All information is available at MetMalaysia’s official website (www.met.gov.my), the myCuaca app, and MetMalaysia’s social media pages.
