Priority to restore economy, revive country’s image — Anwar

By Sulyn Chong

SHAH ALAM, Nov 16 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has pledged that if given the mandate to govern Putrajaya, the Pakatan Harapan’s (Harapan) main priority is to restore Malaysia’s economy so that the people will not continue to suffer.

The Harapan chairman said that the economy is the coalition’s main focus and he is determined to reinstate the faith of foreign investors in the country and strengthen domestic trade.

“As long as the confidence of investors is not restored, as long as there is no focus to bring back foreign investors and no confidence in domestic trades and investments, (then) the strength of the ringgit will not return,” he said at the Jelajah Mega Harapan programme in Danau Kota, last night.

Addressing thousands of people who attended the event, Anwar also raised the question as to whether other political parties have come up with resolutions or placed a focus on restoring the economy.

“Did you hear (Tan Sri) Muhyiddin Yassin telling you how to recover the economy? Did you hear (Datuk Seri) Ismail Sabri (Yaakob) wants to recover the economy?

“Did they share how they want to strengthen the ringgit? Told anyone how to lower the prices of goods? (In fact) They don’t know,” he said.

Anwar, who is also the Harapan candidate for Tambun parliamentary seat, said that the coalition and himself are prepared to take serious steps to revive the image of the nation and to maintain its integrity and dignity to attract back foreign investors.

“This is in contrast to Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Barisan Nasional (BN), who have shown they both do not have the ability or even the courage to do so during their tenure as government.

“(That is because) This economic system has been overhauled to become one that supports (business) cartels and monopolies.

“(But) not that ‘cartel’, because we know even Keadilan (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) have ‘cartels’,” he said in jest in reference to former Keadilan members, incumbent Gombak MP Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and incumbent Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin, who were nicknamed as the “cartels” of the party.

“So tomorrow, we attack Ampang and Gombak! Until there is no trace of treachery in the politics of the land,” said Anwar, rallying for support from the people to fight against political traitors.

Meanwhile, Anwar stressed the importance of winning this 15th general election is not just for individual candidates, but for the coalition as a whole.

“I don’t want Zahir (Hasan) to just win. I want him to win with pride so that we can make our constituencies a stronghold of Harapan,” he added, referring to the Harapan candidate for Wangsa Maju parliamentary seat.
