Selangor begins Sungai Klang deepening project to prevent floods

By Norrasyidah Arshad

SHAH ALAM, Nov 1 — The Sungai Klang’s deepening and widening project covering 56km of the river will be conducted in stages to prevent floods, beginning yesterday.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the project, with an estimated investment cost of RM700 million, comprised four main blocks that are slated to be completed in five years.

He said the first phase, covering 10km, involved three-metre dredging work in an area near the Sri Muda housing area.

“Overall, the project is expected to benefit 500,000 residents, especially in hotspot areas like Sri Muda, Bukit Lanchong, Kampung Tengah, and Kampung Baru Hicom.

“This project is managed by Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI and Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd. By the end of this year, it is expected to reach 20 to 30 per cent total completion,” Amirudin said at a press conference after launching the project.

He added the deepening process, which covers the length of the river and land surrounding it from Mid Valley to Port Klang, would help to increase water retention capacity and reduce the risk of floods.

“Our focus is clear, to resolve flood-related issues. We want to prevent last year’s flooding incident from recurring,” Amirudin said.

Meanwhile, the Menteri Besar said the project will also generate economic development along Sungai Klang.

“We will be developing this area including stationing Lembaga Urus Air Selangor here, so it will be easier to conduct water resources monitoring routines,” he said.

During the tabling of the 2022 Selangor Budget last year Amirudin said 600 acres of land have been identified for development, which will take between eight to 10 years to complete.

The development also includes the construction of 3,400 house units with a total gross development value of RM1 billion.
