SHAH ALAM, Dec 24 — The Selangor Water Management Board (Luas) has immediately taken various measures to tackle the odour pollution detected in Sungai Semenyih this morning, which was caused by a perfume oil spill of 1000 litres following an accident on the Elite Highway in Negeri Sembilan.

In a statement today, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari also apologised to those who are affected by the unscheduled water disruption, which was caused by an incident outside of Selangor, on Christmas Eve.

“I apologise for the incident that occurred the night before the Christmas celebration and I regret that this accident beyond the state of Selangor has affected the people of Selangor.

“I have also been in contact with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change and will make every effort to quickly restore the water supply for the benefit of all residents,” he said in a statement today.

Amirudin said the immediate actions taken by Luas to address the issue include installing three oil booms and an oil pad in the affected area as a preventive measure and placing 12 bags of activated carbon (AC) to reduce the odour pollution.

“The liquid waste is also being cleaned by a contractor appointed by Luas with the help of two suction tanker trucks owned by Indah Water Konsortium (IWK).

“Some 360 million litres per day (JLH) of water is also being released from the Sungai Semenyih Dam to dilute the water in Sungai Semenyih and reduce the odour pollution,” he said in a statement today.

Amirudin said that Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) has also mobilised 85 water tankers and placed static water tanks to ease the burden of the consumers that are affected by the unscheduled water cut following the temporary suspension of the Sungai Semenyih Water Treatement Plant (WTP) at 2am and Bukit Tampoi WTP at 6am this morning.

The two WTPs were forced to temporarily shut down early this morning following an odour pollution incident at Jenderam Hilir Raw Water Pump Station.

Luas had traced back the odour pollution to a perfume oil spill of 1,000 litres due to an accident involving a lorry carrying a load of perfume oil at KM 44.1 heading north on the Elite Highway near Bandar Serenia, Negeri Sembilan, which is located some six kilometres from the border of Selangor.

A total of 472 areas in five Selangor regions are expected to experience unscheduled water supply disruptions starting 7am today, namely Petaling (172 areas), Hulu Langat (54 areas), Sepang (196 areas), Putrajaya (23 areas) and Kuala Langat (27 areas).
