KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 23 — Work to replace escalators for the Light Rail Transit (LRT), Mass Transit (MRT) and Monorail services is expected to be fully completed in February next year.
Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd, in a statement today, announced that it only received the first phase of the spare parts earlier this month as the delivery was delayed due to global supply chain disruptions.
“With the availability of the spare parts, immediate replacement work has been carried out by the contractor of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in stages and is expected to be fully completed in February 2023.
“As of December 15, the process of replacing 20 handrail units and three step chain units at 10 MRT stations has been completed, and the escalators at the stations are back in operation,” according to the statement.
As a long-term measure, it said, Rapid Rail has implemented a condition-based maintenance (CBM) programme where the process of replacing components that are assessed to be damaged or frequently problematic will continue to be carried out without waiting for the end of the service life.
For Monorail stations that were originally designed without elevators, Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana), in realising the need for the facility, especially by the elderly and people with disabilities (PwDs), is providing additional 18 elevator units and 39 units of wheelchair platform lifts.
“The work to upgrade the lift facility at the monorail requires structural improvements and also involves some safety issues that need to be improved.
“This upgrading project will start in the first quarter of 2023 and will take 18 months to complete,” it said.
On the leakage problem at 93 locations in the stations, it said, repair works at 21 locations at the LRT and Monorail stations were completed, while the rest will be resolved in stages and are expected to be fully completed by June next year.
For the repair work at the MRT stations, the repair process at 22 leak locations has been carried out and monitoring of the effectiveness of the repair work is being carried out.
“There are leak locations that require more time to be completed because the repair work involves modification to the roof structure,” it said, adding that Rapid Rail has also carried out regular inspection and maintenance programmes.
It said that currently, the number of non-functioning lights is below one per cent.
“The work of repairing the wiring system and replacing the problematic bulbs at the station is also almost completed. The rest of the lights that are still not working are new faults and will be replaced immediately,” read the statement.
