Floods: 141 Fire Dept personnel across country affected too — Minister

KOTA BHARU, Dec 22 — The wave of flooding across the country has also affected 141 officers and members of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM).

Deputy Minister of Local Government Development Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said those involved also had to be evacuated to temporary evacuation centres (PPS) as their houses were flooded.

“We will make sure their welfare is maintained and necessary aid is given to ease their burden,” he told a press conference at the Kelantan JBPM headquarters in Tunjong here today.

Also present were JBPM director-general Datuk Seri Mohammad Hamdan Wahid and Kelantan JBPM director Zainal Madasin.

Akmal Nasrullah said incentives or assistance should be given to rescue personnel affected because they remain committed when on duty despite their homes being inundated too.

He said JBPM also provided two helicopters in Bachok (Kelantan) and Wakaf Tapai (Terengganu) to rescue victims from flood-ravaged areas.

“The provision of the helicopters is to air-lift patients from remote areas to hospitals and deliver food to inaccessible areas such as Orang Asli villages besieged by flooding,” Akmal Nasrullah said.
