SHAH ALAM, Dec 6 — The Selangor government is targeting 8,000 Selangor University (Unisel) and Selangor International Islamic University (UIS) students to receive fee assistance from the state administration this year.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the initiative through the Basic University Fee Assistance (Bantuan Yuran Asas Universiti or Bayu) programme with an allocation of RM4 million has benefited less than 3,000 students so far.
“I have checked and found that there are still some procedural delays. After this, we will hand it over to the universities to monitor and an audit will be made.
“We want more people to obtain assistance under Bayu, thus attracting more undergraduates and new students to join and register with Unisel and UIS,” he said in his 2023 Selangor Budget winding-up speech during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting, here today.
Meanwhile, Amirudin also praised the two universities for being able to accept admissions of foreign students despite the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Several prominent universities had seen decline (in enrollment), especially because there were no admissions of foreign students,” he said.
