Odour pollution near Jenderam Hilir pump station clears, Sg Semenyih WTP to resume operations — MB

SHAH ALAM, Dec 31 — The latest reading on the Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant (WTP) at 11pm has show a zero Threshold Odour Number (TON), said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

On Twitter, he said the reading was confirmed after being taken several times.

“With this, the pollution can be overcome and the WTP reactivated again,” Amirudin said.

Earlier this evening, the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) detected odour pollution at a static monitoring location 1.5km from the Jenderam Hilir raw water pump station intake, which resulted in the WTP shutting down at 9pm.

The pollution is believed to have been caused by leftover pollution due to an accident on December 24 involving a lorry carrying a load of perfume oil along the Elite Highway in Negeri Sembilan, which occurred at KM 44.1 heading north near Bandar Serenia, some six kilometres from the border of Selangor.

The accident resulted in an unscheduled water disruption due to the temporary shutdowns of the Sungai Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi Water Treatment Plants (WTPs).

This led Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd to mobilise 85 water tankers to 472 areas in five regions in the Klang Valley that were affected. Water supply subsequently resumed the following day.
