Recycling centre could reduce five per cent of total waste — Exco

SHAH ALAM, Dec 8 — Hundreds of recycling centres that have been actively operating across the state could reduce five per cent of the total waste in Selangor.

State executive councillor for environment Hee Loy Sian said even though recycling is not a new approach, it has huge advantages when done frequently.

“In Selangor alone, we have 250 active recycling centres that are operating in various locations including in permanent buildings and cabins, in addition to 16 recycle bins situated in Shah Alam.

“By having these recycling centres, it helps to reduce five per cent of total waste, lower down the cost for garbage landfills and educate the public on the importance of recycling activities,” he said when met after officiating the Community Recycling Centre and 5R Carnival Programme in Section 13 here today.

Also present was Shah Alam mayor Dr Nor Fuad Abdul Hamid.

Hee hoped the community would play their roles by sending recyclable items to the nearest recycling centre around their area.

“To ensure the success of this programme, we need strong collaborations from all parties, including the community. The state government has supplied and provided the infrastructure, however the separation process must be done by the residents.

“Indeed, there aren’t enough recycling facilities, but more are being built, particularly in suburban areas,” he said.
