SHAH ALAM, Jan 29 — The Chinese New Year celebration organised by the state government is indicative of the people’s harmony under the rule of His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said although the state has witnessed various challenges, most of its people remain united.

“A multiracial and multiconfessional society is an integral part of the nation and the people’s historical heritage.

“Although there have been various challenges along the way, the majority of the people have proven that unity is an important asset which must be preserved and constantly nurtured among our ranks,” he said.

Amirudin was speaking in his address during the state-level 2023 Chinese New Year open house at the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) Banquet Hall, here yesterday evening.

Sultan Sharafuddin and Her Royal Highness the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin also graced the event and were feted to lion and dragon dances, traditional Chinese opera, and drumming performances at the MBSA Auditorium.

The Menteri Besar added a similar event also took place at Dataran Kemerdekaan for the wider public, in line with the Selangor Maju Bersama concept.

“The state government, via various programmes and initiatives, can provide equal benefits to all citizens regardless of race and religion,” he said.

Themed Musim Bunga Kembali ke Khatulistiwa (Return of Spring to the Equator), the open house featured cultural performances involving 120 artists like soprano singer Evelyn Toh.

The first 2,000 visitors were also offered angpaus totalling RM10,000 which they received via the Wavpay e-wallet app, as well as a lucky draw for electrical goods worth up to RM3,000.
