DOSM calls for all departments, agencies to share data on OpenDOSM Nextgen platform

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 — The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has called on all concerned parties and departments to share any publicly available data on the recently launched OpenDOSM Nextgen platform.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the sharing of data is to move the country towards being a digital and informed society.

“Agencies can also submit their data because the system can store any amount of data sets received. The data can also be arranged according to easily understood topics,” he said during today’s episode of Bernama TV’s Malaysia Petang Ini programme ‘Benefits of OpenDOSM Nextgen‘.

OpenDOSM NextGen, which was launched yesterday, is the new open data access function for official statistics from DOSM and other government agencies that came from adding new features and functions to the OpenDOSM system.

Apart from easy and fast access to open data, OpenDOSM NextGen also offers a modern interface design for all users, including students, journalists and data scientists.

The platform contains data that has been catalogued and can be presented as dashboards enabling users to understand the information easily.

In terms of the scope of this dataset initiative, there are eight themes covering labour, economic indicators, consumer prices, wholesale and retail trade, manufacturing, national accounts, cost of production and health (Covid-19).

OpenDOSM’s dataset will be updated from time to time, encompassing various ready data in DOSM and open data from all agencies and ministries.

Mohd Uzir said the OpenDOSM Nextgen is part of DOSM’s continuous innovation and modernisation efforts towards an effective statistical service aimed at empowering the rakyat to be involved in a culture of innovation through open data.

The department is also constructing a platform that would enable OpenDOSM Nextgen users to provide feedback for improvements.

“We will provide a special email address in the near future for feedback and improvement to further strengthen the platform,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohd Uzir said open data allows for analysis and interpretation by anyone with access and would not be limited to data providers.

“Access to open data will enable the analysis and interpretation of new information provided by various parties based on the intentions methodology. This, in turn, will expand the culture of innovation among the rakyat.

“Open data not only allows the rakyat to make informed decisions but, more importantly, empowers the rakyat to contribute to good policy formulation that can benefit everyone,” he added.
