By Sulyn Chong

SHAH ALAM, Jan 16 — Thunderstorms, heavy rains and strong winds are expected to hit five Selangor districts until 9pm today, said the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

In a warning issued at 6.40pm on Facebook, the agency said the districts affected are Kuala Selangor, Klang, Petaling, Kuala Langat and Sepang.

“Other states that will be similarly affected are Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Melaka. In addition, thunderstorms are also anticipated in Negeri Sembilan (Seremban, Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah, Rembau and Tampin) as well as Johor (Tangkak, Muar and Batu Pahat).

“Meanwhile in East Malaysia, stormy weather is forecasted for Sabah: Tawau (Lahad Datu) and Sandakan (Kinabatangan),” it said.

MetMalaysia issues warnings whenever signs indicate a thunderstorm with a rain intensity exceeding 20 mm that is close to or is expected to occur for more than an hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning valid for a period not exceeding six hours for a single release.
