SHAH ALAM, Jan 20 — Thunderstorms, heavy rains and strong winds are expected to hit five Selangor districts until 5pm today, said the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

In a warning issued at 2.30pm on Facebook, the agency said the districts affected are Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Klang, and Gombak.

“Other states that will be similarly affected include Perak (Hulu Perak, Kampar, Bagan Datuk, Hilir Perak, Batang Padang and Muallim), Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Jerantut, Temerloh, Maran and Bera), Johor (Tangkak, Muar, Batu Pahat and Pontian).

“Meanwhile, in East Malaysia, inclement weather is predicted to occur in Sarawak (Lawas), Sabah (Sipitang, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Tambunan, Lahad Datu, Telupid, Kinabatangan, Beluran, Sandakan and Kudat) and Labuan,” it said.

MetMalaysia issues warnings whenever signs indicate a thunderstorm with a rain intensity exceeding 20 mm that is close to or is expected to occur for more than an hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning valid for a period not exceeding six hours for a single release.
