SHAH ALAM, Jan 1 — Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari attended a special Maghrib sermon yesterday on the last day of 2022, as a replacement for the New Year celebration at Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah.

The sermon, titled ‘Demi Masa‘, was delivered by noted preacher and icon of Mahabbah Islamic Foundation Darul Ehsan (Yide) Ustaz Don Daniyal Don Biyajid, which also saw close to 1,000 congregants in attendance.

Also present was the state executive councillor of Islamic Religious Affairs Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, and the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad.

Earlier in December last year, Amirudin announced the state-wide New Year’s event would be cancelled as a mark of respect for the victims and families affected by the floods on the East Coast, as well as landslides.

The state government took a similar approach leading up to 2022, where it did not organise any New Year celebrations due to the heavy floods that affected Selangor in December 2021, which was subsequently replaced with tahlil ceremonies, doa selamat, and zikir munajat.

Asides from Selangor, the New Year 2023 celebration on the Federal level, originally scheduled to take place at Dataran Merdeka, was also cancelled due to the floods that have affected several states.
