Petaling Jaya MP proposes Select Committee to tackle climate change

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 — Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung has proposed the formation of a parliamentary Select Committee on Climate Change and Sustainable Development to tackle issues of climate change in the country.

He said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Johari Abdul responded positively to the proposal when it was forwarded to him today.

Lee said it was important to have the committee explore new approaches to tackle climate change, as Malaysia was not spared disasters like floods and landslides.

“I hope the Dewan Rakyat Select Committee meeting would give appropriate consideration for the establishment of this select committee.

“This will enable the whole leadership of this country to combat issues of climate change and make it a priority agenda,” he told a press conference at Parliament building here today.

Lee said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had mooted such a committee at the 2022 Climate Change Symposium on September 5 last year when he was the Opposition leader.
