Selangor hopes to open golf academy, train youth players

PETALING, Jan 9 — Selangor plans to establish an academic centre at a golf course in the state, said the State Secretary Dato’ Haris Kasim.

He said the establishment of the academy aims to provide training to young players.

“In Selangor, there are more than 100 golf courses and we propose to make an (golf course) academic center for players under the age of 18 to gain knowledge related to this sport,” he said when met after the 2023 Selangor International Junior Golf Championship at Seri Selangor Golf Club, here yesterday.

Also in attendance to officiate the inaugural ceremony was His Royal Highness Raja Muda Selangor Tengku Amir Shah. The state executive councillor for sports Khairuddin Othman was also present.

Haris said the tournament, where 10 countries participated, has received an encouraging response and the state government has agreed to make it an annual event.

“We plan to invite more countries in the future and those who succeed will be invited to participate in the Selangor Golf Masters Tournament,” he said.

Earlier, 105 youth players aged 12 to 18 competed in the 2023 Selangor International Junior Golf Championship which was held from 5 to 8 January 2023.

The tournament organised by UUM International School Melaka (UUMISM) in collaboration with the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) involved players from Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, the Philippines and Indonesia for the group category.

The individual category included players from India, Canada, Hong Kong, China, Japan and Malaysia.

The men’s junior golf team of group A emerged as the champion by defeating the South Korean team by collecting a total of 683 points.

For the women’s team category, South Korea won with each of them successfully bringing home the Raja Muda Selangor trophy.
