SHAH ALAM, Jan 13 — The state government will look into the proposal to streamline the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for animal shelters under the local councils in Selangor as well as to see the need to upgrade the centres.

State executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han said the state administration has ordered the local councils to review and update their SOPs for the shelters to safeguard the welfare of the animals.

“The SOP review will be tabled to the Selangor State Executive Council so that the improvements can be made.

“We are aware of the sadness and disappointment expressed by Her Royal Highness Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin on the state of the dog shelter belonging to the Kuala Langat Municipal Council, which was recently viral.

“The Selangor state government is committed to safeguarding the welfare and protection of all animals housed in the shelters in the state,” he said in a statement today.

Yesterday, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin directed authorities, especially the municipal councils, to improve and upgrade management procedures at dog and cat shelters under their jurisdiction.

Her Royal Highness, who is also the Royal Patron of the Stray Free Selangor (SFS) campaign run by the Society For The Prevention of Cruelty Animals (SPCA), said the authorities need to review and adopt a more holistic approach to managing these animal shelters.

Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin expressed sadness and disappointment following the viral pictures and videos of abandoned dogs being neglected at a dog shelter in Selangor and ordered that the daily SOP being used at the shelter be reviewed.
