50 pct increase in prize money for 2023 Malaysian Cub Prix

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 18 — The prize money for the 2023 Malaysian Cub Prix Championship has increased by almost 50 per cent in conjunction with the 30th edition of the motorcycle race.

Safe Aim Mutual Sdn Bhd promotions director Ron Hogg said the total prize money for the 10 rounds of this season’s race amounted to almost RM500,000, not including the winning bonus.

He said the competition for 2023 will also be stiff with the presence of several new teams, apart from the use of fuel injection technology for the Wira class, making it the third national class machine to switch to that technology.

“We have big plans for the next five to 10 years, where we want to give more opportunities to Malaysian riders to go to the international level. One of the problems now is the cost, so the best thing we can do is train them in Malaysia (through Cub Prix).

“So that when they go to a higher level, they can continue to compete at the highest level,” he said when met by reporters after celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Cub Championship Prix last night.

Ron said the Cub Prix community in Malaysia is large, involving about 1,500 riders, mechanics, team members, marshals and crew in a race week.

He expressed his gratitude to all quarters for helping to hold the race since 1994, especially Petronas, which has been the main sponsor for 20 years.

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh praised the organisers for being able to generate their own income to continue the race without relying on financial assistance from the government,

This should be emulated by other sports bodies, she added.

Yeoh said she had also instructed the ministry to reduce bureaucracy in obtaining approval to organise sports competitions.

This season’s Cub Prix will begin with the first round at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) on February 25-26, followed by the race at Jempol (March 11-12), the third round on May 27-28 at a location yet to be decided and the SIC South (June 10-11).

The race will then continue at Tangkak Racing Track on July 8-9, Terengganu Race Circuit (July 21-22), Teluk Intan (September 2-3), Terengganu Race Circuit (September 22-23) and Tangkak Racing Track (October 21-22) before ending at Batu Kawan on November 25-26.
