Data sharing crucial to further boost Asean growth

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 — As countries ramp up their economic activities post-Covid-19, the importance of data sharing among Asean countries is seen as greater than ever in order to further boost the trade bloc’s strength in the global economy arena.

BIMB Securities Sdn Bhd non-executive director Dr Nurmalizah Mahzan said a country’s data intelligence and data analytics could help another member country to plan and develop initiatives, especially in crafting more effective and efficient economic policies.

Timely and comparable data is a great asset, she said, noting that it can also be the country’s strength in attracting foreign direct investment, forge collaborations and promote technology transfer as its capacities and capabilities are made known to the masses.

“I think data, in terms of availability of talents — in the development of technology such as coding or other skill sets — will be very important.

“If we do have data (on) which one of our subsidiaries or which country has that capacity and that technology, then this will be a matchmaking between the investors and the provider,” she told Bernama on the sidelines of the Asean Finance Innovation Summit here, today.

Nurmalizah, who is formerly the chief executive officer of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants, was one of the speakers at the two-day summit.

She added all stakeholders, be it in the public or private sector, play a significant role in data compilation, indicating that part of the Asean Economic Community’s (AEC) data-sharing initiatives are on economy and mobility within the region.
