SUBANG JAYA, Feb 1 — The Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) has issued 1,045 fines to traders for various offences with a penalty value of RM325,840 throughout the past year.

Deputy Mayor Mohd Zulkurnain Che Ali said out of that number, a total of 537 cases were for the offence of not maintaining roadside stalls and obstruction in public areas, followed by 272 cases for the offence of operating premises without a licence.

“A total of 192 cases for the offence of displaying advertisements without a licence followed by 35 cases of driving heavy vehicles during prohibited times and areas, seven cases of illegal dumping and two cases of entertainment centres operating without a licence.

“MBSJ takes this matter seriously and will not hesitate to take court action against offenders who still fail to comply with the law,” he said in the local authority’s monthly meeting, here yesterday.

Mohd Zulkurnain called on hawkers who operate on the side of the road or on parking lots to immediately stop the activity because it poses a safety risk to customers and road users.

“The public is also urged to report any illegal activities carried out around the Subang Jaya area to the MBSJ,” he said.

During the meeting, Mohd Zulkurnain also said that MBSJ is building a food court at Jalan SS19/6 for the convenience of small traders which is expected to be fully completed in October this year.

He informed that the 0.74 hectare project with a cost of RM2.98 million will be equipped with 20 stall units and basic facilities such as surau and toilets.

The Deputy Mayor added that the food court, which began construction on December 8 last year, also has 106 parking spaces for cars and motorcycles in addition to four special parking spaces for disabled people (OKU).

“MBSJ is pleased to implement this project that benefits the entire city community in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Sustainable Cities and Communities.

“It is also in line with the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) which is to improve the quality of community life, thereby building strong resilience in facing future challenges with an increasingly complex environment,” he said.

Mohd Zulkurnain believes that the construction of the food court can benefit the entire Subang Jaya city community, especially small traders.

He said that the rental rate set so far is a minimum of RM400 per month taking into account the factors of location and ease of access around the area.

In the meantime, he said MBSJ has drawn up a total of 39 major projects to be implemented this year involving a total expenditure of RM125.4 million.

Meanwhile, Mohd Zulkurnain has also invited the public to enjoy the MBSJ Car Free Day @ Selamat Pagi Subang Jaya programme organised by MBSJ on February 5.

He said various interesting activities will be held in conjunction with the programme which will take place at Jalan SS16/1, in front of the Aeon Big Subang Jaya supermarket, from 7am to 11am.

“In this edition, there are several additional activities to be held including Endurance Challenge (Bicycle), Eco Free Market, Push Bike Tournament, Buskers Competition and Mayor’s Cup Street Soccer Tournament.

“Apart from that, there will also be leisurely running activities, leisurely cycling, breakfast parties, food trucks, free health checks, cupping, archery and lucky draws,” he said.

MBSJ Car Free Day @ Selamat Pagi Subang Jaya which started in August last year is held on the first Sunday of every month.

The programme is organised as an effort to make MBSJ a low-carbon city by 2030.
