MGA sets modest one gold target for SEA Games in Cambodia

SHAH ALAM, Feb 8 — The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) has set a modest target of one gold medal for the SEA Games hosted by Cambodia in May this year, said MGA president Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor.

He said the MGA would not set a target of defending the two gold medals won during the Vietnam SEA Games because most of the players who are based in the United States will be tied down with tournaments organised by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the US.

“In the previous SEA Games, we had good players, but this time six of them cannot make it because there is a clash of dates with the tournaments organised by NCAA.

“For this SEA Games, the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) wants three gold medals from golf but it is impossible, we will try to get one gold this year, maybe we can target the team gold, but we cannot expect from individual events, our target is the team boys or girls,” Mohd Anwar told reporters after signing a Sponsorship deal for the MGA Junior Development Programme, here today.

The collaboration for the MGA Junior Development Programme signed by MGA was with three sponsors, namely Colla Group, Reneuco Berhad and NJDP Training Grant Worth.

In the 2021 SEA Games hosted by Vietnam, golf brought home two gold medals, a silver and a bronze medal.

Meanwhile, he said the names of 20 players who have been shortlisted, have been sent to the OCM and that the MGA would announce the team members to Cambodia comprising four men and three women players, on April 26.

Mohd Anwar said the development programme would be for a period of six months and aimed at exposing young National golfers and preparing them to face international tournaments in the future.
