Wholesale, retail volume index up 9.9 pct in fourth quarter — DOSM

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 — The volume index of the wholesale and retail trade Malaysia registered a 9.9 per cent growth year-on-year (y-o-y) in the fourth quarter (4Q) of 2022, bringing the overall performance for 2022 to 14.3 per cent, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin attributed the increase to the retail trade sub-sector, which rose 19.3 per cent, followed by motor vehicles and wholesale trade, which increased 7.0 per cent and 0.9 per cent, respectively.

“For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index increased 1.6 per cent, supported by motor vehicles which grew 5.1 per cent,” he said in a statement today.

Moving on to performances across sub-sectors, the volume index of retail trade recorded a 19.3 per cent growth, contributed by retail sales of automotive fuel in specialised stores with 35.7 per cent.

“This was followed by the retail sale of other goods in specialised stores (32.9 per cent) and retail sale of non-specialised stores (22 per cent).

“Meanwhile, the volume index of retail trade climbed up 2.0 per cent as compared to the previous quarter,” Mohd Uzir added.

The volume index of the wholesale trade sub-sector recorded a 0.9 per cent growth in 4Q 2022, compared to the same quarter in 2021, contributed by wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals of 13.7 per cent.

As for the seasonally adjusted volume index, wholesale and retail trade decreased 1.8 per cent as against 3Q 2022.

Meanwhile, the wholesale trade and retail trade sub-sectors recorded a decline of 2.0 per cent and 0.1 per cent, respectively.

“Volume index of wholesale and retail ended 2022 with 142.1 points, up 14.3 per cent, supported by motor vehicles, retail trade and wholesale trade, which grew 39.2 per cent, 19.2 per cent, and 3.6 per cent, respectively,” he said.
