Maran, parts of Johor fully recover from floods

KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 — The flood situation in Maran, Pahang, and in three districts in Johor has fully recovered as of 2pm today.

In Johor, the state Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) reported that the flood situation in Segamat, Kota Tinggi and Pontian districts has recovered, and all victims have been allowed to return to their homes.

However, there has been an increase in the number of evacuees in Batu Pahat, which experienced rising water following the clash of river overflow from Segamat, and the high tide phenomenon.

It also said that Batu Pahat remains the worst affected district, with 29,341 evacuees, followed by Muar with 4,123 and Tangkak with 2,536.

Overall, the number of evacuees has increased slightly, to 41,543 people, who are placed in 198 temporary relief centres, as of 2 this afternoon, compared with 40,141 people, in 202 centres reported this morning.

A total of 11 rivers are still above the danger level, including Sungai Batu Pahat at the Bekok Dam (Batu Pahat), which is now at a level of 20.09 metres (m); Sungai Muar in Buloh Kasap (Segamat), at 9.53m and Sungai Muar in Bukit Kepong (Segamat), at 5.23m.

In Pahang, JPBN reported that a centre which accommodated 13 evacuees in Maran has been closed, leaving only Rompin district affected by floods, with 15 centres still operating, to accommodate 2,255 people this afternoon.

The publicinfobanjir.water.gov.my portal reported that Sungai Keratong, in Rompin, is still above the danger level this afternoon.

Meanwhile, in Melaka, JPBN said that the number of evacuees in Jasin remained at 598 people, from 159 families, and are accommodated in five centres, as of 2pm today.
