Selangor ready to send boats, rescue equipment to help Johor flood victims

By Zareef Muzammil

KUALA LANGAT, March 5 — The Selangor government is ready to send rescue boats and rescue equipment to aid flood victims in Johor if needed.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said that they have not yet received any application from the Johor government for the assistance.

“We have not been contacted because usually it (rescue equipment) is managed by the federal government through the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma).

“God willing, we are ready to send the aid at any time if there is a need. We do not want to rush to send the aid there to avoid chaos,” he said when met after inaugurating the Kuala Langat Jelajah Kita Selangor Penyayang roadshow at Banting Waterfront, here today.

Amirudin said the second phase of the Bantuan Kita Selangor Penyayang mission will be mobilised to involve cleaning and restoration operations in the area.

“State executive councillor for human capital development Mohd Khairuddin Othman will contact his partner in Johor for us to send a cleaning crew and a Rapid Action Team (Pantas),” he said.

Yesterday, the Bantuan Kita Selangor Penyayang mission led by the State Disaster Management Unit (UPBN) (Management Services) Divisional secretary Muhammad Hanafi Ahmad have delivered various basic necessities to Johor.

Necessary items such as food, drinks, hygiene kits, clothes and disposable diapers were sent to the Disaster Needs Storage Depot (Southern Zone), Muar to facilitate delivery to flood victims.

A total of 1,000 food items and 1,000 hygiene kits were handed out including 418 food baskets, 200 five kilogram rice packs, adult and children’s disposable diapers, slippers, adult and children’s clothes, mineral water and many more.

Meanwhile, a total of 4,000 nannies are targeted to participate in the Iltizam Penjagaan dan Pendidikan Awal Kanak-Kanak Selangor (Impak Selangor) this year.

Amirudin said registration for the programme is opened to the state’s childhood care centres’ caregivers while registration for unlicensed care centres will be opened in the near future.

“Impak Selangor is the newest programme under Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor (Yawas) for unregistered nannies, especially those caring from home, to obtain licence before being given training.

“We estimate 4,000 nannies (registered) but the number may increase. Community service centres are asked to identify (nannies) in the neighbourhood and register them,” he said.

Amirudin said the introduction of the programme could increase the confidence of working parents to send their children to babysitters.

“In addition to establishing the direction of the childcare industry in Selangor, we can deal with issues of child abuse when there is a proper record track through this programme.

“Indirectly, all parties are protected, namely the babysitters, parents and children,” he said.
