State approves RM556.6 mln to upgrade infrastructure for flood prevention — Exco

SHAH ALAM, March 14 — The Selangor government has approved RM556.6 million in development funding to upgrade the state’s basic infrastructure to address the flood issues in the state.

State executive councillor for environment Hee Loy Sian said 44 per cent, or RM245.86 million, is allocated to the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) to develop flood mitigation projects.

He said the construction of flood bunds, flood retaining walls, flood tunnels, bypass channels and barrages are part of the state agency’s flood management planning.

“The drainage system is also upgraded, in addition to the development of flood reservoirs, such as underground storage, elevated reservoirs, and vertical and horizontal storage.

“The (flood mitigation) planning also includes national flood warning forecast project, integrated river system management study, flood mitigation master plan study, and environmentally friendly drainage master plan,” he said during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting, here today.

Hee was answering a question by Bukit Lanjan state representative Elizabeth Wong on the state government’s approved allocation of resources for climate change adaption and mitigation.

He added that the Federal government has also approved an allocation of RM455.2 million to JPS for the implementation of four flood mitigation projects, located in Sungai Kayu Ara, Sungai Buloh, Sungai Langat dan Sungai Kuyoh.

“The government through the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) has also allocated for development projects under the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment, Climate Change.”
