Sultan Of Selangor Cup competition to return after three-year break

SHAH ALAM, March 15 — The Sultan of Selangor Cup (TSSC), an annual friendly football competition contested between two rival football clubs, Selangor and Singapore, will make a comeback after a three-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 19th edition of the TSSC will be held at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on October 28.

The Sultan of Selangor Cup was the brainchild of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, which began in 2001 to strengthen the ties between the Selangor FA and Singapore and to rekindle their rivalry after Singapore pulled out of the Malaysian League in 1994.

The rivalry between the two teams had always been intense because of their status as the two most successful clubs in Malaysian football history.

Chairman and TSSC team manager Tan Sri Abd Karim Munisar said a Selangor Selection and a Singapore Selection will vie for RM80,000 prize money while a selection of veterans from Selangor and Singapore will play in a curtain raiser, prior to the main match.

“Fans from both sides of the causeway have been eagerly waiting for the TSSC because it gives the fans a chance to watch their beloved former veterans in action and to reminisce the past since a match between Selangor and Singapore has always generated excitement,” he told reporters after presenting appointment letters to the new TSSC exco members who have received the consent of Sultan Sharafuddin, here today.

Abd Karim said the TSSC will kick off with the match between Selangor Veterans and Singapore Veterans at 8pm while the main match — a Selangor Selection vs a Singapore Selection — will kick off at 9 pm.

Some 70,000 fans are expected to fill the National Stadium during the TSSC.

In the previous edition held in 2019, Selangor beat Singapore 1 – 0 to lift the trophy.
