MPKj collects over RM5 mln in parking compounds since March

SHAH ALAM, April 19 — The Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) has collected around RM5.6 million from the payments of approximately 97,693 parking compounds for 2023, as of March.

Its President Najmuddin Jemain said the council also received 14,168 compound settlement appeals at that same time.

“The collected revenue is the result of the Law Department’s hard work in enforcing prosecution actions against MPKj law violations, including issuing three compound settlement reminder notices every month to those who have failed to clear their arrears.

“In the first three months of this year, as many as 14,000 notices were issued against compound defaulters,” he said during the MPKj Meeting at Menara MPKj yesterday.

Najmuddin added that to encourage the payment of MPKj compound arrears, its Legal Department has decided to carry out a campaign to reduce parking compounding and for miscellaneous offences.

The inaugural campaign has been met with a favourable response from the public so far.

“For example, last year there were two campaigns held in conjunction with MPKj’s 25th anniversary, during which the total compound collection reached RM2,920,220,” he said.

In 2022 a total of 438,967 compounds were settled, 68,413 appeals were received, and 128,437 compound settlement reminder notices were issued.

Meanwhile, Najmuddin said MPKj will introduce a Two Hour Parking Zone to improve the availability of parking spaces in its areas, especially during peak hours, starting on June 1.

A total of 152 parking spots have been prepared at public focus locations, including commercial areas. Areas, where cars are frequently clamped, have also been selected.

“It will be implemented in stages involving 12 areas. The first phase which runs from June 1 to June 14 is an introductory and learning period for the public, before it comes into full force on June 15.

“It involves 19 parking spaces marked with orange lines along Jalan Tun Abdul Aziz,” he said.

The Two Hour Parking Zone payment rate is 50 cents for every half hour or part thereof, with the effective period from 8am to 6.30pm, except on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

“No extensions will be permitted once the two hours are up, and the vehicle owner must immediately vacate the spot once their time is up.

“The zone can only be used again after an hour following the expiration,” Najmuddin said.

Payments to use the spots can only be made using the Smart Selangor Parking (SSP), FlexiParking, Touch ‘N Go Wallet, and JomParking apps. Members of the public are not permitted to use monthly passes or daily payments.

Prior to this, on March 22 the Petaling Jaya City Council similarly implemented the two-hour parking zone concept
