KAJANG , April 9 — Following an increase in food waste collection from Ramadan bazaars to 48 per cent as of yesterday from 45 per cent the week prior, the general public is advised to reduce waste.
KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) managing director Dato’ Ramli Mohd Tahir said checks at the bazaars in Selangor found that more than 73 tonnes of food waste are collected daily.
“There are almost 10,000 Ramadan bazaar sites, 8,000 of which are managed by KDEBWM.
“As of the middle of Ramadan, the daily collection of food waste has reached between 70 and 73 tonnes every day,” he said after handing over Aidilfitri donations to orphans in Hulu Langat, here yesterday.
Ramli also urged the bazaar traders and customers to avoid wasting food and not to overdo it when preparing and buying meals for breaking-fast.
On March 31, KDEBWM said it collected 73.67 tonnes of food waste every day compared to 50.78 tons last year with an increase of 45 per cent.
The agency said that the waste was collected from areas under seven local authorities, with significant increase recorded from bazaars under the Klang Municipal Council with 16.5 tonnes of waste per day.
