Project to deepen Sungai Klang to benefit half mln residents in flood-prone areas

SHAH ALAM, May 18: The project to deepen Sungai Klang, aimed at preventing river overflow, is set to benefit some 500,000 residents, particularly in flood-prone areas.

Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd managing director Syaiful Azmen Nordin said the affected areas include Taman Sri Muda, Bukit Lanchong, Kampung Tengah, and Kampung Baru Hicom.

The project was initiated due to the insufficient capacity of Sungai Klang to handle large amounts of water during the heavy rains in November 2021.

“Therefore, we need to deepen it by at least five meters to increase the capacity of Sungai Klang by 40 per cent from a technical standpoint. With the increased capacity, we can prevent river overflow and consequently, avoid floods,” he said in an exclusive interview with Media Selangor recently.

Syaiful Azmen said the 56-kilometre-long project will take up to three years to complete in high-risk areas, with the initial phase covering a distance of 10 kilometres in Taman Sri Muda.

“We refer back to the flood incidents in 2021 and divide the high-risk areas into four blocks. In Taman Sri Muda, there is a specific report studying the direct impact. That’s why we started the project here in early November,” he said,

The project, aimed at deepening and widening the downstream area of Sungai Klang, with a cost of RM700 million, has been carried out in stages since last year to reduce flood risks across 12 zones, from Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur, to Port Klang.
