SEA Games brawl: Thai FA apologizes, promises through investigation

BANGKOK, May 17 — The Football Association of Thailand (FA Thailand) has apologized following the on-pitch brawl during the final match between Thailand and Indonesia at the 32nd SEA Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Tuesday (May 16).

FA Thailand said in a statement a disciplinary committee will be established to thoroughly investigate all individuals involved in initiating and/or being involved in the incident in front of the spectators both in the stadium and around the world.

Thailand lost 5 – 2 after extra time on Tuesday, and ended the game with only eight players on the field.

“The FA Thailand would like to express our deepest regret for the incident that occurred during the final match. The incident on Tuesday has caused serious damage to the Thailand National Football Team’s image.

“We are providing formal apologies to all other organizations involved in this competition for any inconvenience or disruption caused,” it said.

FA Thailand said the disciplinary committee will gather the facts and take appropriate action in accordance with the regulations set forth by the association.

“There will be no protection or immunity granted to anyone responsible for any wrongdoing in this incident. As a result, the investigation procedure will promptly commence upon the team’s return to Thailand,” it said.

FA Thailand welcomed all constructive suggestions aimed at enhancing performance and preventing similar occurrences from happening in the future.

It said the team coaching staff are regarded as representatives of the FA Thailand, Thai football and Thai people, who were expected to exemplify professionalism at all times.

On Tuesday, two mass brawls and four red cards marred the final match. Among those sent off was Thai goalkeeper Soponwit Rakyart who joined in the second skirmish and delivered a diving punch to an opponent team member.
