Shuttlers to use President’s Cup to gear up for Sudirman Cup

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — The country’s Sudirman Cup badminton squad will tune-up for the last time for the prestigious tournament when they compete in the President’s Cup at Juara Stadium, Bukit Kiara, this Sunday (May 7).

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in a statement today said the simulation tournament for the national badminton athletes who will take on the challenge of the Sudirman Cup in Suzhou, China from May 14 to May 21, which can be witnessed by local badminton fans this time round.

The President’s Cup was last organised in 2020 as preparation for the national players for the Thomas and Uber Cup tournaments. It took place without the presence of spectators and was broadcast live on private television.

“As a result of organising the President’s Cup in 2020, the national players benefited greatly, especially those who participated in the Thomas and Uber Cups for the first time,” said the statement.

It added that based on the organisation of the last edition, Akademi Badminton Malaysia and the coaching staff decided to re-organise the President’s Cup tournament which uses a competition format of 20 players divided into two balanced teams.

In the Sudirman Cup, Malaysia is drawn in Group C with Taiwan, India and Australia and has to finish the group-level competition in first or second position to advance to the quarter-finals.

Malaysia have never won the Sudirman Cup, which has been contested since 1989. The country’s best achievement was reaching the semi-finals in 2009 and 2021.
