Tighten management to beat bullying, minister tells MAF

SEREMBAN, May 13 — Every organisation in the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) should strengthen their management to overcome the problem of bullying among personnel, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

He said every organisation would have their own standard operating procedure (SOP) to deal with individuals who committed this immoral act.

“If there is a clear breach of service (regulations) by those involved, the armed forces will take the necessary action according to the level of offence.

“Some may warrant dismissal from service. This is why I say, the laws are there, just like our country, but violations continue to happen,” Mohamad told reporters after opening the Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Tuanku Ja’afar Parent-Teacher Association meeting, earlier today.

He was commenting on yet another case of alleged bullying at a military facility, this time involving a trainee at the Port Dickson Military Training Camp, which has gone viral on social media.

Port Dickson district police chief Supt Aidi Sham Mohamed was quoted as saying that the incident happened at about 10am on April 17, and it was reported to the police on April 22.

Mohamad said he did not have the details of this case and was leaving it to MAF and police to investigate.

He advised armed forces personnel to focus on improving their work and service quality, instead of getting involved in unhealthy activities like bullying.

On another matter, Mohamad said Malaysia was capable of producing small warships if it received proper technological support from its overseas partners.

“In terms of expertise, it is not impossible for our shipyards to build medium-sized ships of 100 metres and below. It is just that we need technology from our friends overseas to build telecommunication equipment and weaponry,” he said.

Mohamad was responding to queries on whether the government planned to allow local shipyards to build ships of below 80 metres in size.
