Waste-to-energy project plan now being evaluated — KDEBWM

By Sheeda Fathil

SHAH ALAM, May 12 — The approval for the waste-to-energy (WTE) project plan at the Selangor Green Energy Eco Park (SGEEP) in Rawang is expected to come in within the next six months to a year.

KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) managing director Datok Ramli Mohd Tahir said the plan is currently in the environmental impact assessment phase.

He said the construction of the WTE is also a sound move in dealing with waste disposal, as well as avoiding pollution.

“The WTE main plan is for the collection of 7,000 tonnes of garbage, which will be disposed of at the landfill. The approval for the plan may take six months to a year.

“The plan will be placed under the SGEEP project, which will be completed within the next two to three years.

“The first phase’s area is estimated to be 60 acres which we will develop, wherein SGEEP is expected to be able to process 2,400 tonnes of garbage daily, producing around 50 megawatts of energy,” Ramli said.

He was speaking to the press during KDEBWM’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house, at the Shah Alam Convention Centre yesterday.

During the tabling of the 2023 Selangor Budget on November 25 last year, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said a RM4.5 billion fund for infrastructure investment and development will be provided via KDEBWM.

He said the SGEEP project is expected to accelerate the use of modern technology in dealing with waste disposal issues since existing waste sites will be unable to accommodate generated waste in the future.
