Dengue cases rise, five deaths logged June 9-15

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — Dengue cases rose to 2,900 in epidemiological week (ME) 24 from June 9 to 15, with five deaths recorded, compared with 2,508 cases in the previous week.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan said the cumulative number of cases reported until ME24 was 70,037, a sharp rise from the 54,139 cases recorded in the same period last year.

“Fifty-three deaths due to dengue complications were reported in the same period, compared with 39 deaths the previous year,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Eighty-five hotspots were identified in ME24, from 71 the previous week.

Dr Radzi said of the 85 hotspots, 58 are in Selangor, eight in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, six in Kedah, five in Perak, four in Negeri Sembilan, and two each in Penang and Sarawak.

He said no chikungunya outbreaks were reported in ME24, while 1,024 blood samples, six urine samples, and two spinal fluid samples were tested for Zika, all of them negative.

“Practise prevention measures such as wearing light-coloured, covered clothing, especially during outdoor activities when Aedes mosquitoes are active — from 5am to 8am and from 5pm to 8pm,” he said.
