NGOs must discuss Gaza aid with Wisma Putra — Mohamad Hasan

REMBAU, June 14 — Any party, especially non-governmental organisations, including Mercy Malaysia workers, have been asked to discuss their plans with Wisma Putra before sending volunteers on humanitarian missions to Gaza.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said this will ensure their safety and prevent untoward incidents due to the uncertain situation in the enclave.

“Don’t be in a hurry to go over (to Gaza). You must discuss it with us, and we will look at when the conditions are favourable and how to enter, because we have (proper) channels and work with (other parties) including Jordan, Qatar and Egypt… If anything happens, the Foreign Ministry will be responsible.

“It’s not as if you can’t go, and a lot of aid is needed… so we have to be systematic… the situation there, even if it is a safe zone, there is still fighting, and refugee camps and aid convoys are still being bombed.

“Let teams from Jordan (help), as they have diplomatic relations with Israel, as do Qatar and Egypt. If anything happens, their authorities can go in and bring their citizens out, but we don’t (have anyone),” he told reporters after presenting aid to 700 elderly folk and primary students here today.

Mohamad said his ministry is in constant contact with Jordan for developments in Gaza, including the delivery of humanitarian aid, adding that Malaysians can donate to the Palestinian Humanitarian Trust Fund managed by Wisma Putra.

“Assistance is greatly needed, sometimes in terms of clothing. If possible, give cash so we can purchase (necessities). What’s important now is they need medical supplies and equipment, and tents as they have lost their homes,” he said.

He said there weren’t any Malaysian volunteers stranded in Gaza after six Mercy Malaysia EMTs have been successfully extracted, along with other international aid workers.
