KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — The Malaysia Checkpoints and Border Protection Agency Bill 2024 to establish the authority was tabled for first reading in the Dewan Rakyat today.
The Bill was tabled by Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and will be presented for its second reading at the same meeting.
The Bill, among others, details the agency’s functions and powers related to border control and protection in addition to making provisions for related matters.
It also states that if an offence is committed under Sabah or Sarawak laws, enforcement, investigation and prosecution will be carried out by state authorities.
IIt was earlier reported Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim witnessed the handover of the Terms of Reference document for the agency as a coordinator between security and enforcement agencies for national border control and protection, six ministries, and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
Under the Terms of Reference, the agency will coordinate special operations with strategic partner departments and agencies.
During the presentation of Budget 2024 in October last year, Anwar announced the establishment of what is now the agency as part of an initiative to strengthen national defence and security preparedness.
