Water cut: Supply recovery at 83.5 pct

KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 — Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) today said supply recovery following an unscheduled water cut on Tuesday was at 83.5 per cent as at 7.30am today.

It said supply to areas affected by the disruption, which was due to odour pollution at the Rantau Panjang and Sungai Selangor Phases 1, 2 and 3 water treatment plants (WTPs), is expected to recover fully by 8am tomorrow.

Most areas have had their water supply fully restored, while several more will see their taps flow again by 8pm tonight.

Air Selangor has advised those who have discoloured water coming out of their taps to let the water run until clear before using it for daily consumption. It expressed hope that consumers whose water supply has resumed will consume the resource prudently so those still affected can enjoy service recovery sooner.

The water company said it has deployed tankers to affected areas, with priority to critical premises such as hospitals, clinics, dialysis centres and funeral services. Alternative water aid is also available at 16 local service centres in Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Gombak, Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Selangor.

Commercial consumers can buy treated water at Air Selangor’s Sepang or Hulu Langat consumer service counters. Air Selangor said these consumers can fill their own tankers at two stations in Hulu Langat’s Braemar Estate and Sepang’s Taman Gemilang Dengkil.

The disruption was caused by effluence from an acrylic materials-processing factory in Rawang. A chemical leak from a storage tank entered drains and subsequently into Sungai Kundang, affecting several other rivers.

The resulting odour pollution caused the temporary suspension of the Rantau Panjang WTP and the Sungai Selangor Phases 1, 2, and 3 WTPs, as well as a water cut in seven regions in the Klang Valley.
