Air Force retiree charged with receiving RM300,000 without consideration for house construction

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — A Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) retiree with the rank of major general pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court today to two counts of receiving RM300,000 for the construction of a house between 2021 and 2022.

Datuk Zainal Abdul Manaf, 61, is charged as a civil servant in his capacity as the then-assistant chief of staff of RMAF Material under the Defence Ministry, having received for himself payment for a house construction of RM200,000 and RM100,000 without consideration from an individual having connection with his official duties.

The two offences were allegedly committed at a bank in Wangsa Maju, Jalan Wangsa Delima 11, D’Wangsa, on December 22, 2021, and March 15, 2022.

The charges were framed under Section 165 of the Penal Code which carries imprisonment for up to two years or a fine or both upon conviction.

Judge Suzana Hussin allowed the accused bail of RM35,000 with one surety. Zainal was also ordered to surrender his passport to the court and to report himself at the Putrajaya Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office once a month.

The court set September 26 for mention.

Deputy Public Prosecutor from MACC Aznika Mohd Anas appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Simret Singh represented the accused.
