SHAH ALAM, Aug 25 — The turbidity of Sungai Bernam is decreasing, with the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) saying yesterday’s water murkiness was due to heavy rain and water surges at nearby rivers.
Luas said the water surges occurred at Sungai Slim and Sungai Geliting (Perak), about 30-40km from Sungai Bernam.
“Luas is in communication with Perak authorities and is thoroughly checking and investigating areas affected, involving Sungai Slim, Sungai Bil, and Sungai Geliting (in Perak),” it said in a Facebook post last night.
However, Luas said, water turbidity at Sungai Bernam is decreasing quite slowly as the water surges caused high sediment flow into the river.
“Luas and Air Selangor are on site to monitor conditions at Sungai Bernam,” it said.
As at 9pm yesterday, the Sungai Bernam water treatment plant was allowed to resume operations in stages, after being suspended temporarily following the high turbidity of raw water in the river due to water surges.
Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd said in a Facebook post that it is monitoring water quality periodically to measure turbidity.
It said water tankers have been deployed in the state, with priority given to critical-need premises.
