Top doubles shuttler Wooi Yik says will give gift car to dad

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 — National top men’s doubles shuttler Soh Wooi Yik has decided to give the sports utility vehicle (Chery Tiggo 7 Pro) he received from Chery Malaysia to his father, Soh Goon Chup.

Wooi Yik said the reward was the perfect opportunity for him to surprise his family with the gift following their tremendous support for him all this while.

“Before this the most meaningful gift (I gave him) was a wallet, but the biggest gift I am going to give him is a car. Dad also asked about the car I got today but I haven’t told him because I want to surprise him.

“Although this gift is from Chery Malaysia, I will give this car to my father. I want to appreciate my family as they took care of me from the beginning, and without them, I would not have been able to achieve success at the Olympics,” he told reporters at the car handover ceremony here today.

Also present was Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.

His doubles partner Aaron Chia thanked Chery Malaysia for celebrating them as Olympic medallists.

“This car is really great, especially for me, as a family man,” he said.

The 27-year-old also hoped athletes would receive more support en route to the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

Asked about their next tournament, Aaron said he and Wooi Yik will be back in action at the Hong Kong Open 2024 from September 10 to 15.

At the Paris Olympics, Aaron-Wooi Yik defended their Olympic bronze after beating Denmark’s Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen 16-21, 22-20, 21-19.

Professional men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia was also presented with a car following his maiden success at the Paris Olympics.

Zii Jia clinched the bronze medal after overcoming Lakshya Sen of India, 13-21, 21-16, 21-11.
