SHAH ALAM, Sept 13 — The Selangor People’s Tuition Programme (PTRS) will be expanded to all primary schools in the state starting next year, said Yayasan Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI head Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor.
The free learning initiative was introduced to address the issue of students falling behind in reading, writing, and arithmetic (3M) skills.
“According to data provided by the Selangor Education Department, over 22,000 primary school students from Year Three to Year Six are facing difficulties with 3M skills.
“The failure to master the 3Ms is due to the lack of access to learning in schools during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We will hold workshops that bring together the PTRS module, the Education Ministry module, and the JPN Selangor module to tackle this issue,” he told Media Selangor.
Azri said PTRS will be expanded to primary schools in an effort to reach the target of 200,000 students benefiting from the free tuition next year.
“Currently, we have 130,000 secondary school students involved, so we plan to expand to more primary schools in order to reach 200,000.
“This is our initial step, in line with the manifesto made by the Unity Government in the recent state elections, to increase the number of PTRS students to 200,000,” he said.
