SHAH ALAM, Sept 5 — The state government is determined to improve the service quality of local authorities to fulfil residents’ expectations.
State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said there are many matters that must still be addressed to improve the people’s quality of life.
“We (local councils) could be much better, in truth. There are still many weaknesses to fix and we will work on it.
“Take for example, complaints about drainage, trash and landscape problems, so this year, we are determined to work harder,” he said in an interview with Media Selangor.
Ng added that efforts to enhance local councils’ services will also uplift Selangor’s image as the most developed state and the biggest economic contributor in Malaysia.
“I know that issues with local authorities in Selangor often become the centre of attention for the people and the media, and we are the largest economic contributor in Malaysia, so we will continue to improve local councils’ quality of service to ensure the state government’s image remains sound and is not disputed by any party,” he said.
Ng said the Solid Waste And Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672) accepted by the state government is set to be implemented by year-end.
He added that the act will make solid waste management in the state more sustainable for Selangor to receive more support from the Housing and Local Government Ministry.
“I am sure that after this, our solid waste management will improve. I expect the act to be implemented by year-end. It is now at the discussion stage at the Cabinet,” he said.
In May, the state government agreed to utilise Act 672, making it the eighth state after Kedah, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Perlis, and Kuala Lumpur to do so.
Act 672 ensures consistent rules in the supervision of solid waste management and public cleansing to ensure more efficient processes and boost the circular economy.
