Kajang house fire which killed teen caused by short circuit

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 — The fire at a two-story terrace house in Saujana Impian, Kajang yesterday afternoon, which claimed the life of a teenage girl, was caused by an electrical short circuit.

Kajang district police chief ACP Naazron Abdul Yusof said their investigations revealed the short circuit occurred on the ground floor of the house and the fire spread to the upper floor, engulfing 60 per cent of the property.

“We received a report about the fire at 4.20pm yesterday. The Fire and Rescue Department and the police forensic teams discovered a charred body in a room on the upper floor.

“It is believed to be that of a 17-year-old girl who was home alone at the time,” he said in a statement today.

The case had been classified as sudden death, and the victim’s body was sent to the Kajang Hospital for an autopsy.

“The autopsy conducted at 9am today confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to inhalation of smoke from the fire,” said Naazron.

The district police chief and all personnel from the Kajang district police headquarters extended their deepest condolences to the victim’s family.
