‘Learn from Selangor, Perak on political maturity, cooperation’ — Exco

SHAH ALAM, Oct 3 — Johor Umno has been urged to draw lessons from Selangor and Perak’s political maturity, following remarks by some of its leaders criticising Pakatan Harapan’s component parties after the recent Mahkota by-election.

State executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi advised the Barisan Nasional (BN) lynchpin to not be too cocky, reminding that the public views strongly against such an attitude.

He added that no political party emerged as dominant or worthy of claiming to be the main party after the 15th general election in November 2022, as none could form the Federal government on their own.

“Our priority as party leaders from both Harapan and BN should be to focus on finding common ground to further strengthen our cooperation and relationship.

“Perhaps, the Umno leadership in Johor could learn from the leadership styles of Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari in Selangor and Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad in Perak,” he said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) today.

Najwan said that in Selangor, for example, an Umno state assemblyman was appointed to the state executive council despite the party only winning two seats in the last state election.

Similarly, despite Harapan securing 24 seats in Perak to BN’s nine, the former agreed to allow a Menteri Besar to be appointed from Umno, in the spirit of unity. In return, seven Harapan state assemblymen were picked as state executive councillors.

Earlier today, Johor Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said Parti Keadilan Rakyat and Parti Amanah Negara are ‘mere passengers’ in the Unity Government, accusing them of overstepping their influence in Johor.

He also rejected calls for a Unity Government in Johor and challenged Harapan to request for a joint administration in the Sarawak government instead.

In response, Najwan advised Jazlan to engage in politics with maturity and integrity.

“Our strength does not come from just being good at talking or acting like heroes in the daytime; we are strong when we are united, resolving our differences through dialogue and mutual respect,” he said.
